Volume Four
PUBLISHERS' FOREWORD
The Battle of Armageddon focuses Bible prophecy on momentous
world events. Written in 1897, it explains the direction and power of the fomenting
revolutionary elements of that era. These were the forces that were to topple the Kingdoms
at the ending of the "Gentile Times" in 1914, and that will bring down the whole
social order. The credibility of this book is increased as the world is drawn relentlessly
toward its final battle. This is particularly notable as world leaders exhaust themselves
in finding a way out of the irrepressible conflict.
The World Magazine, (Aug. 30, 1914), a notable periodical of
that day, wrote about the author's predictions: "The terrific war outbreak in Europe
has fulfilled an extraordinary prophecy. For 25 years Bible Students have been proclaiming
to the world that the Day of Wrath prophesied in the Bible would dawn in 1914."
The Great Ideas Today, 1963, Britannica Great Books,
Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc., pp. 107, 108, had this reflection: "A world mesmerized
by Science and Progress mocked the mysticism of religious sects which had long predicted
that the world would end in the year 1914; fifty years later the world isn't so sure that
it didn't end in 1914."
World observers have not overlooked the effects of 1914 upon the world. Here is an
observer's comment: "If ever there was a year that marked the end of an era and the
beginning of another, it was 1914. That year brought to an end the old world with its
sense of security and began a modern age whose chief characteristic is insecurity on a
daily basis." (Rowse, Oxford Historian and Biographer, June 28, 1959)
The fragmented world of today can no longer be visionary about new forms of government
or ideologies. Who now sees socialism, communism, nationalism or the like, as a solution
or remedy for world ills? Armageddon was never more real and inescapable as in our time.
But the author showed also that the best part is yet to come. Christ's Millennial Kingdom
is to replace human endeavors at government. Never has such a hope been sweeter and more
welcomed than now. It is, in fact, the world's only hope.
The author collected extensive speeches written in the 1890s. Many will find these
fascinating as history and as demonstrations of the logic of cause and effect. We heartily
present this book and the prophetic insights it affords as among the finest of its kind.
May the Lord bless your study of it.
